Proposed street-race for Indian GP ?

Date March 28, 2007

As we wrote earlier, the Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya is hell-bent on bringing Formula 1 to India and our good ol’ Bernie is also very much interested in Indian Grand Prix. While earlier there were talks of building of a new circuit [which is not yet abandoned completely], now there are talks of having a street-race in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Bernie vows to change F1’s points system

Date March 12, 2007

Bernie Ecclestone

“With second place getting eight points it is not right that the winner takes only ten,” Bernie Ecclestone, is quoted as telling an English newspaper, “for 2008 I will propose a change.” “It would be simple,” Ecclestone said, explaining that the constructors’ title would still be decided based on points. But for the drivers’, “the guy who wins more should be champion”, Bernie added.

Abu Dhabi GP seven-year deal confirmed: UPDATE

Date February 3, 2007

As reported on autosport

“We’re very committed to Abu Dhabi,” Bernie Ecclestone told reporters at the ceremony, “It’s one of the great places in the world. We have a seven-year contract, but I’m sure the race will go on forever.”

The race will be held on Yas Island, a lavish man-made Island that occupies a total land area of 2,500 hectares (around 6,200 acres) which also house the Ferrari Theme park which is under construction.

The Formula One track, designed by Hermann Tilke, will be 5.8 kilometres long, featuring the designer’s signature long straight leading into a slow hairpin. “It was initially a flat man-made island, but we’ve created some man-made hills, so the track will rise up and down,” Tilke said. “One part of the track is a permanent facility, and the other is 2.5-km city track through the streets [of Yas], and running in front of the marina.”

Well, there is nothing new in that. Everyone saw it coming from a mile-away. Another new race-track and one more possibility of losing a existing race-track.

Bernie hints at second US GP

Date January 27, 2007

As reported on homeofsport

Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that a second Formula One race in the United States might soon be added to the annual calendar. Briton Ecclestone has reportedly been in talks with alternate US venues, including groups in Las Vegas and Chicago. But he said: “Maybe we wouldn’t need to make a change, maybe (we will) add a race. Other places are looking at us.”

Indianapolis’ F1 promoter Tony George has signed only a one year contract to cover this season’s grand prix, but Ecclestone ruled out offering US organisers a discounted race fee. Bernie said: “Why should we race in America for certainly half the fee we get in other parts of the world?”

Another circuit ? But at what price ? Everyone know that quiet a few new circuits are being launched in coming years, and we also know that the number of GP won’t be more than 20 in a race calender. So adding more circuits means chopping off some existing one, which is only going to hurt the sentiments of the race-fans as one of their favorite circuit will be definitely dropped. Does it really make sense to add another circuit in a country that is already having a GP ???

Delhi likely to host Indian Grand Prix

Date January 17, 2007

As reported on F1i.com

India is edging closer to a deal to host formula one, with Toyota’s first Indian sponsor revealing that the first race could be held in Delhi in 2009.

Vijay Mallya, who is believed to have close ties with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, told reporters at the launch of the TF107 in Cologne that he was “optimistic” about the prospect of an Indian GP, “the government of Delhi I think really wants formula one,” …… Bernie said late in 2006: “We had to make sure we found the right place in India and we have.”

Well, this is just confirming what we wrote two months ago in our old blog Is the wait finally over ?. And as we wrote earlier [on this blog] that Vijay Mallya is the person who is playing a major role in brining F1 to India. And we are eagerly waiting for the official announcement.
