Bernie hints at second US GP
January 27, 2007
Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that a second Formula One race in the United States might soon be added to the annual calendar. Briton Ecclestone has reportedly been in talks with alternate US venues, including groups in Las Vegas and Chicago. But he said: “Maybe we wouldn’t need to make a change, maybe (we will) add a race. Other places are looking at us.”
Indianapolis’ F1 promoter Tony George has signed only a one year contract to cover this season’s grand prix, but Ecclestone ruled out offering US organisers a discounted race fee. Bernie said: “Why should we race in America for certainly half the fee we get in other parts of the world?”
Another circuit ? But at what price ? Everyone know that quiet a few new circuits are being launched in coming years, and we also know that the number of GP won’t be more than 20 in a race calender. So adding more circuits means chopping off some existing one, which is only going to hurt the sentiments of the race-fans as one of their favorite circuit will be definitely dropped. Does it really make sense to add another circuit in a country that is already having a GP ???

Bernie is going to have to make a hard decision soon. A second U.S. GP has been on Bernie’s dream list. Singapore has been given 3 months to settle their issues to hold a night GP and they have very large pockets behind their proposal.
India is talking the big talk about a GP venue. The oil sheiks in Abu Dhabi are getting serious about a track, Korea has already been approved for the 2009 season.
The hard decision Bernie has to make is not which venue to cut but how many new events to add to the schedule.
The F1 prima-donnas have one of the longest off-seasons of any series.
It’s time to cut it, and add 2-4 events to the season.
